Muscle strengthening and balance improvement programme for elderly

Physical inactivity associated with ageing is one of the key factors contributing to the development of muscle weakness, gait instability and falls.

Multi-component physical exercise programmes and particularly strength and stability training are the most effective interventions to delay disability and improve gait pattern.

This programme has proven useful for other health problems such as falls, cognitive impairment and depression.

The aim of the activity is to strengthen the muscles of the whole body - mainly the lower limbs - improve balance and increase safety and confidence while walking in order to minimise the risk of falling.

Participation in the programme begins with a medical assessment by a geriatric specialist and a series of functional and cognitive assessments which are repeated at the end of the programme to check the degree of improvement achieved.

The Matia Fundazioa programme lasts for 3 months at a rate of 1 hour twice a week. In each session, participants perform balance exercises (balance mat and individual exercises) and other exercises on a machine that work on muscle strength. All under the supervision of a physiotherapist.

The programme takes place at our Usandizaga Centre.
